Wethersfield Historical Society believes history happens every day, and history is definitely happening right now! It was originally an oxbow in the Connecticut River. If you want to get away from it all take a drive down to the Cove.

  • Wethersfield Cove is a cove with a history of warehouses . Founded in 1634 by a Puritan settlement party of "10 Men" including John Oldham, Robert Seeley, Thomas Topping and Nathaniel Foote, Wethersfield is arguably the oldest town in Connecticut, depending on one's interpretation of when a remote settlement qualifies as a "town". It is now used as a launching site for small craft and a nice place to see the sun set and have a picnis. CASTLE ON THE COVE The park includes open space and the cove. The Cove Warehouse is located on the waterfront of the Wethersfield Cove and used to interpret Wethersfield’s maritime trade with the West Indies that flourished between 1650 and 1830. Wethersfield Historical Society is not alone in having had to close our doors to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic, so we (and over 130 of our fellow museums and attractions) have been invited to participate in this year’s virtual Open House Day hosted by the Connecticut Office of Tourism. The online archive holds complete copies of all archive material owned by Wethersfield Local History Group (or when relevant permission has been provided). Deming launched the Tryall, the first ship built in Connecticut, from the cove in 1649.
