The Khmer Rouge was a brutal regime that ruled Cambodia, under the leadership of Marxist dictator Pol Pot, from 1975 to 1979. Pol Pot created in Cambodia one of the 20th century's most brutal and murderous regimes in history, the Khmer Rouge. In the late 1980s, little was known of Khmer Rouge policies toward the tribal peoples of the northeast, the Khmer Loeu. By January 1980, the US was secretly funding Pol Pots exiled forces on the Thai border. Under the Khmer Rouge, especially during Year Zero, Pol Pot demanded that Cambodia must return to an agrarian, non-industrialized nation without any advanced technology at all. Pol Pot was prime minister of the new Khmer Rouge government from 1976 until he was overthrown by invading Vietnamese in January 1979.
